What sets the trust banks apart

  • Most of their assets are managed. According to FDIC data, 56.7% of the national trust banks' fiduciary assets are in managed accounts, against 23.3% for all banks and trust companies. They hold 30.6% of all managed fiduciary assets that US banks report, according to FDIC data.
  • The leader. BlackRock Institutional Trust Company alone reports 6.2% of the fiduciary and related assets of every US bank and trust company, and $3.06 trillion of its own are managed, according to FDIC data.
  • Holding companies. 28 of the 60 report a holding company as their top-tier parent, according to FDIC data; the other 32 report none.
  • The median. The median national trust bank reports $5.1 billion in fiduciary and related assets, and 9 of the 60 report less than $1 billion, according to FDIC data.

Trust companies registered with the SEC

State-chartered trust companies that take no insured deposits file no Call Report and appear on no federal list of trust companies. A trust company is generally not an investment adviser under the Advisers Act, but some register with the SEC anyway. Form ADV Part 1A asks each adviser whether it is actively engaged in business as a trust company, Item 6.A.(8). According to SEC data for September 1, 2026, 19 of 17,142 SEC-registered advisers say yes. None of them is a national trust bank on the OCC's list. The table shows each firm's own answer, as filed, not whether it holds a trust charter.

What this means for technology buyers

A trust company runs on the same specialist systems as a bank trust department, trust accounting and fiduciary administration above all, without a bank's core systems to build on. These guides compare the options:

How this list was built

The universe is the OCC's list of trust banks active on September 30, 2026: 67 national trust banks. Each is joined to its Call Report for June 30, 2026, as published in the FDIC's BankFind Suite, by FDIC certificate number; the 5 with no certificate filed no Call Report, and each joined pair shares its name. Trust banks are ranked by total fiduciary and related assets, managed plus non-managed accounts; that arithmetic holds on every row.

Five trust banks on the list filed no Call Report for June 30, 2026, according to FDIC data: BitGo Bank & Trust, Fidelity Digital Assets, First National Digital Currency Bank, OneSource Virtual Trust Bank and Paxos Trust Company. Two filed one with no fiduciary and related assets: Alvarez & Marsal Trust Company and IRACE Digital Bank. None of these is ranked.

The FDIC records whether each Call Report filer is FDIC-insured. Every uninsured institution that reported fiduciary assets for June 30, 2026 is on the OCC's list, so the list misses no trust-only national charter that the Call Report data shows. Five of the ranked trust banks are FDIC-insured: The Bank of New York Mellon Trust Company, CIBC National Trust Company, Stifel Trust Company, Stifel Trust Company Delaware and National Advisors Trust Company.

The Form ADV section reads the SEC's monthly file of registered advisers for September 1, 2026. Advisers whose latest filing is more than fifteen months old are left out, because they have missed an annual amendment; none of the advisers that answer yes to Item 6.A.(8) was left out on that rule. The form itself sets out each item.

Limits

  • National charters only. State-chartered trust companies are not ranked. Those that take insured deposits file Call Reports and appear in the bank trust department ranking; those that do not file none, and appear here only if they answer yes on Form ADV.
  • Fiduciary assets are not revenue. Non-managed accounts can be large and earn little; managed assets are shown so the difference is visible. Custody and safekeeping are reported separately and are not included.
  • Charters, not groups. A group with several trust banks appears once per charter, and a group's trust business in a full-service bank is not here.
  • Two dates. Fiduciary assets are as of June 30, 2026; the list of trust banks is as of September 30, 2026; the Form ADV answers are as of September 1, 2026.
