Key Takeaways

  • According to SEC Form ADV data, 67 SEC-registered advisers call themselves family offices in their names and report high net worth clients; together they manage $224 billion.
  • Pathstone reports $110 billion, more than the next 48 of them combined, according to SEC data.
  • These firms attribute 85% of their regulatory assets to high net worth individuals, and the median manages $8.3 million per high net worth client, against $2.7 million at the median SEC-registered adviser with such clients.
  • Single-family offices that meet the SEC's family office rule do not register and are not counted. Data as of September 1, 2026.

Pathstone (legal name Pathstone Family Office, LLC) manages $110 billion, more than the next 48 SEC-registered firms that call themselves family offices combined, according to SEC Form ADV data for September 1, 2026. 67 SEC-registered advisers have "family office" in their name and report high net worth clients, and together they manage $224 billion, according to SEC data; the median firm manages $699 million. WE Family Offices is second, with $17.8 billion, according to SEC data.

Form ADV has no family office field, so this list is built by a stated rule rather than a regulator's flag: an SEC-registered adviser whose name, as filed, says "family office", and that reports high net worth individual clients. It cannot include single-family offices. Under the SEC's family office rule, a family office that meets the rule is not an investment adviser under the Advisers Act, so it does not register and files no Form ADV.

What the numbers show

  • The clients are wealthy individuals. According to SEC data, these firms attribute 85% of their combined regulatory assets to high net worth individuals, and 59 of the 66 that report regulatory assets attribute at least half to them.
  • The relationships are large. The median firm on the list manages $8.3 million per high net worth client, against $2.7 million at the median SEC-registered adviser with such clients, according to Form ADV data.
  • Where they are. Florida is home to more of them than any other state, 10, according to SEC data. One is based outside the United States.

One of them reports no regulatory assets and is listed in the full dataset rather than ranked, according to SEC data.

What this means for technology buyers

A family office reports on everything a family owns, not only the portfolio it manages: private companies, real estate, trusts and partnerships, often across generations. That puts consolidated reporting, partnership accounting and estate planning at the center of its systems. These guides compare the options side by side:

How this list was built

The universe is every adviser in the SEC's monthly file of registered investment advisers for September 1, 2026, published October 2, 2026. The rule has two parts, and anyone can rerun it on that file:

  • Self-description: the primary business name or legal name, as filed, contains the words "family office" or "family offices". 76 advisers match.
  • Client test: the adviser reports high net worth individual clients in Item 5.D.(b) of Form ADV Part 1A, either a number or the "fewer than 5" box. 67 pass; the nine that do not are set aside and named in the full dataset with their client counts.

Firms are ranked by regulatory assets as filed. 68 advisers in the file whose latest Form ADV filing is more than fifteen months older than the file are left out before the rule is applied, because they have missed an annual amendment, according to SEC data. For every firm in the table, the regulatory assets it attributes to each client type in Item 5.D.(3) add up to its total, as the form requires, which shows the client-type columns were read in the right places. There is no second publisher of a family office list to check against.

Limits

  • Single-family offices are invisible. A family office that meets the SEC's rule 202(a)(11)(G)-1 does not register, so the largest family offices in the country may not appear in any SEC data.
  • The rule misses firms that do not use the words. A multi-family office that does not say "family office" in its name, whatever it calls itself, is not on this list. The high net worth ranking ranks every SEC-registered adviser by the assets it manages for high net worth clients.
  • Form ADV does not count families. The list cannot tell a multi-family office from a single-family office that registered anyway, or from a firm that uses the words as a brand. Client counts are each firm's own.
  • SEC-registered advisers only. State-registered advisers and exempt reporting advisers are not in the SEC's file.
  • One file date. The date of the data is September 1, 2026. Client counts and assets by client type are updated at each annual amendment, so they can be up to a year older than the file.

Frequently asked questions

Q: Do family offices have to register with the SEC? A: Not if they meet the SEC's family office rule, rule 202(a)(11)(G)-1: such a family office is not an investment adviser under the Advisers Act. A multi-family office, or a family office that does not meet the rule, is not excluded by it and registers like other advisers.

Q: Which is the largest SEC-registered family office? A: Among SEC-registered advisers with "family office" in their name that serve high net worth clients, Pathstone, with $110 billion in regulatory assets, according to SEC Form ADV data for September 1, 2026. Firms that do not use the words are not counted.

Q: How many multi-family offices are registered with the SEC? A: Form ADV does not say. According to SEC data for September 1, 2026, 67 SEC-registered advisers have "family office" in their name and report high net worth clients; other multi-family offices register under other names.

Q: Why are single-family offices not on the list? A: A single-family office that meets the SEC's family office rule is excluded from the Advisers Act, so it files no Form ADV and does not appear in the SEC's adviser data.
