Why credit unions merge
The NCUA records a reason for every merger it approves. In the last four quarters:
- 105 mergers, 70%, were filed to offer members expanded services.
- 24 cited poor financial condition, and 4 poor management.
- 12 cited an inability to find officials: volunteers willing to serve on the board and committees.
- 3 cited a lack of support from the sponsor, the employer or association a credit union was chartered to serve.
The longer view
- The NCUA approved 668 mergers from the start of 2022 through March 2026: 179 in 2022, 144 in 2023, 161 in 2024, 157 in 2025.
- The busiest full year in that period was 2022, with 179 approvals.
- Credit Union 1 of Lombard, IL was the continuing credit union in the most mergers over the period, 26 mergers, and 30 credit unions absorbed three or more.
- In the last four quarters, 25 mergers joined credit unions headquartered in different states.
An approval is not a completed merger. Members of the merging credit union still vote, and a deal can be withdrawn. Of the 149 mergers approved in the last four quarters, 14 merging credit unions, the largest of them Commonwealth One, still filed a Call Report for June 2026: their mergers were still pending, or had been withdrawn.
What a merger means for technology
The continuing credit union moves the merging one's members onto its own systems, and the conversion weekend is the part members notice. These guides cover the systems involved:
- Mobile banking apps for regional institutions: the channel most members use first after a conversion.
- Data warehouse solutions for financial services: bringing two member bases' data into one place.
- Deposit management platforms: repricing and retaining the shares that come with a merger.
- KYC automation platforms: bringing new members up to the continuing credit union's standard.
Planning the integration? The Retail Bank Business Capability Model maps the work a credit union shares with a retail bank, so both sides of a merger can be laid against one model, and the Retail Banking Business Information Model defines the data that has to be converted.

How this list was built
Each merger is a row in the detail workbook of the NCUA's quarterly Merger Activity and Insurance Report, which lists the mergers its regional offices approved that quarter. Every quarter's count and merging assets are checked against the summary workbook of the same report, which states both; where the NCUA's two tables disagree, the detail rows are kept as published and the quarter is named in the build checks. Reports from the start of 2022 on share one layout and are all read.
A credit union the NCUA approved more than once, usually because a first merger was withdrawn and re-filed, often with a different partner, is counted once, at its latest approval. 5 credit unions were approved more than once over the period.
Whether a merging credit union still exists is checked against the NCUA's Call Report data for June 2026: a charter that no longer files has completed its merger or closed.
Limits
- Approvals, not completions. A merger counts in the quarter the NCUA approved it, which can be months before the conversion, and a merger can still be withdrawn after approval.
- Assets are as reported with the approval, not at the date the merger took effect.
- Federally insured credit unions only. Privately insured credit unions are not supervised by the NCUA and do not appear.
- One publisher. Every record is the NCUA's; the Call Report check confirms which merging credit unions have stopped filing, not the terms of any deal.
