The longer view
- According to FDIC data, 6,255 institutions filed a Call Report at the end of 2015, and 4,313 for June 30, 2026, a fall of 31%.
- 1,760 unassisted mergers between the start of 2016 and June 30, 2026 account for most of that change.
- The busiest full year in that period was 2018, with 264 mergers; the quietest was 2024, with 58.
- In the last twelve months, 45 deals, 38%, crossed a state line, and 7 of the 110 acquirers bought more than one bank.
A further 25 mergers in the last twelve months were between banks in the same group. Those are corporate reorganizations rather than deals, and they are not counted here.
What a merger means for technology
The acquirer usually moves the acquired bank onto its own core, digital banking and payments systems, and the conversion is the part of the deal customers notice. These guides cover the systems involved:
- Cloud-based core banking systems: for acquirers deciding whether to convert onto their current core or move both banks to a new one.
- Data warehouse solutions for financial services: bringing two banks' data into one place.
- Financial close and consolidation software for banks: one set of books after the deal.
- KYC automation platforms: bringing acquired customers up to the acquirer's standard.
Planning the integration? The Retail Banking Business Architecture Toolkit gives a capability model, value streams and an information model to map both banks against, and the Bank Value Streams show which customer journeys a conversion touches.

How this list was built
A merger here is an FDIC structure change with code 223, merger without assistance, effective between the start of 2016 and October 23, 2026. Each acquired bank's size is its total assets in the last Call Report it filed before the effective date. Every acquired bank of the last twelve months is confirmed to be inactive in the FDIC's records, and 118 of the 118 could be sized from a report filed before the merger.
The counts of banks are the number of institutions that filed a Call Report for each period, from the same source, so both ends of the comparison count the same thing.
Limits
- Completed mergers only. A deal counts on the date it took effect, not when it was announced, so pending deals are not here.
- Size is the acquired bank's. The table shows what was acquired, not the combined bank, and a deal announced as one transaction can close as more than one merger if the seller owned several charters.
- Unassisted mergers only. Failed banks sold by the FDIC, absorptions, and mergers between affiliates (FDIC code 224) are excluded.
- One publisher. Every record is from the FDIC; no second source publishes the same list in a form that can be checked row by row.
