The nine fastest-growing credit unions with at least $500 million a year earlier each absorbed another credit union during the year, according to NCUA records; measured against the combined assets a year earlier, the fastest, CommunityAmerica, changed by +1.7% rather than +158.8%. Among federally insured credit unions that started the year to June 30, 2026 with at least $500 million, CommunityAmerica grew its total assets the most, 158.8%, from $3.5 billion to $9.0 billion. The charter, which filed as Unify Financial a year earlier, absorbed CommunityAmerica during the year and took its name; measured against the combined assets of both credit unions a year earlier, its assets changed by +1.7%, according to the NCUA's records. The fastest-growing credit union that absorbed no other credit union in the year was OnPath, up 36.6%, according to NCUA data. Over the same year, the assets of all federally insured credit unions changed by +5.0%, according to NCUA data.
This ranking keeps credit unions that absorbed another on their reported growth, because a merger is real growth of the charter, and shows beside each one what it absorbed and how fast it grew measured against the combined assets a year earlier. Measured that way, the fastest-growing credit union above the floor was ELGA, at +46.0% measured against its combined assets with the credit union it absorbed, according to NCUA data.

The 25 fastest-growing US credit unions
Ranked by the change in total assets from June 30, 2025 to June 30, 2026, among the 731 federally insured credit unions that held at least $500 million on June 30, 2025. Each row is one credit union. "Absorbed in the year" lists the credit unions that merged into it in the year, from the NCUA's merger reports. Where a credit union files under a different name than a year earlier, the earlier name is shown. In four of those mergers the continuing charter now files under the name of the credit union it absorbed, so the name in the table is the absorbed credit union's and the earlier name is the continuing charter's.

Growth by merger and growth without one
A credit union's assets can grow because members bring in more shares and borrow more, or because it merges with another credit union. The Call Report shows only the total. The NCUA's quarterly merger reports show the second: each approved merger, with both credit unions named.
- Seventeen of the twenty-five fastest-growing credit unions absorbed at least one other credit union during the year, according to the NCUA's merger reports.
- The fastest-growing credit union that absorbed no other credit union in the year was OnPath, up 36.6%, according to NCUA data.
- The median credit union above the floor changed by +5.2%, according to NCUA data.
The column "growth with absorbed credit unions combined" adds each absorbed credit union's assets a year earlier to the continuing credit union's own, and measures growth against that sum. It is a comparison of two figures from the same report date, not an estimate of what the credit union would have done alone: the absorbed credit union's balance sheet also changed during the year.
What this means for technology buyers
Fast growth puts weight on every system a credit union runs, and growth by merger adds a conversion: two memberships, their accounts and their products moved onto one set of systems. These guides compare the options side by side:
- Cloud-based core banking systems: what a move off a legacy core involves, and who can take it on.
- Deposit management platforms: for growing shares and deposits across a larger membership.
- Mobile banking apps: the channel two merged memberships have to share from the first day.
- CRM for financial services: one record of every member relationship after a merger.

How this list was built
Total assets are read from each credit union's Call Report for June 30, 2026 and for June 30, 2025, from the NCUA's quarterly Call Report data. Each quarter reproduces the NCUA's own Quarterly Credit Union Data Summary for that quarter: 4,214 credit unions now and 4,370 a year earlier, with the same total assets. A credit union is ranked if it filed for both dates and held at least $500 million on June 30, 2025; the floor is set on the starting figure so that a small base cannot produce a large percentage.
A credit union that converts between a federal and a state charter files under a new charter number. In the year, 16 credit unions did so, the largest with $8.1 billion in assets a year earlier; each is matched to its earlier filings by its Federal Reserve RSSD ID, which the conversion keeps, rather than read as one credit union closing and another opening.
Credit unions absorbed are read from the NCUA's Merger Activity and Insurance Reports from March 2024 through March 2026, each checked against its own summary count. A credit union counts as absorbed if it filed a year earlier, no longer files, and a report names it as merging into a credit union that still files: 138 credit unions in the year. Another 17 that filed a year earlier no longer file and have no published merger record, the largest with $583 million, according to NCUA data. On each refresh the build checks that none of those holding $50 million or more is in the same state as a credit union the table shows growing without a merger by at least as much as it held.
Limits
- Growth is total assets, as filed. It includes everything that moves a balance sheet: shares and deposits arriving or leaving, loans, investments, cash held at the end of the quarter, and mergers.
- Two dates, one year apart. A credit union that grew and then shrank within the year, or the reverse, shows only the net change. The dates of the data are June 30, 2025 and June 30, 2026.
- The merger report runs behind the Call Report. It is published quarterly, and the latest available covers approvals through March 2026. A merger approved and completed after that is not yet attributed.
- The combined-growth column is a comparison, not a pro forma. It does not adjust for merger accounting or for assets moved out to complete a merger.
- Federally insured credit unions above the floor only. Smaller credit unions, privately insured credit unions and banks are not ranked.
