The table below names the largest federally insured credit union headquartered in each of the 50 states, the District of Columbia and 3 territories, 54 in all, from the NCUA's Call Report data for June 30, 2026. A credit union is counted in the state where it is headquartered, which is not necessarily where its members live. Every figure is the one the credit union reported, and the national totals match the NCUA's own published summary for the quarter.

The largest credit union headquartered in each state

"Most members" names the credit union with the most members when that is not the largest by assets. Names are as the NCUA lists them, which usually leaves out "Credit Union".

How concentrated each state is

  • The largest credit union headquartered in a state holds a median 26.1% of that state's credit union assets.
  • Texas is headquarters to more credit unions than any other state, 376. California is headquarters to the most credit union assets, $319 billion.
  • In 8 of the 54, the credit union with the most members is not the one with the most assets.

A high share can mean a state has few credit unions, or one credit union that serves members far beyond its borders. The table shows how many credit unions each state has, so the two can be told apart.

What this means for technology buyers

Whether a credit union leads its state or is one of many there, it chooses among the same systems. These guides compare them side by side:

How this list was built

The universe is every federal credit union and federally insured state-chartered credit union in the NCUA's quarterly Call Report data for June 30, 2026, 4,214 in all. Each is placed in the state of its main office's physical address, from the branch file the NCUA publishes with the Call Report data; the few with no main-office row in that file are placed by their mailing address. Credit unions are then ranked within each state by total assets as reported. A state's share is the leader's total assets divided by the total assets of every federally insured credit union headquartered in the same state.

The NCUA separately publishes a Quarterly Credit Union Data Summary from the same filings. The credit unions on this page reproduce it, in count, membership and total assets, and the state groups add back to the national totals exactly, so no credit union is left out or counted twice.

Limits

  • Headquartered in, not operating in. Each credit union is counted once, in the state of its main office. It does not show where members live or where branches are, so a state's share here is not a market share of the credit union business in that state.
  • Federally insured only. A small number of state-chartered credit unions are privately insured; the NCUA's totals leave them out, and so does this page.
  • Assets are one measure of size. The credit union with the most members is shown beside the leader, because the two can differ.
  • Credit unions, not banks. Banks in the same state are not counted, so a credit union that leads its state may be small next to the banks there.
  • One quarter. The date of the data is June 30, 2026. A merger can change a state's leader between filings.
