Direct and indirect auto lending
A credit union can lend to a member who comes to it for a car loan, or it can buy loans that a third party, such as a car dealer, arranges at the point of sale. The NCUA calls the second kind an indirect loan: a loan "where a third party facilitates the financing arrangement", the credit union makes the final underwriting decision, and the loan is assigned to it soon after. The NCUA's instructions add that indirect loans are not limited to loans made through car dealers.
- According to NCUA data, credit unions held $269 billion of indirect vehicle loans on June 30, 2026, 55.3% of their vehicle loans.
- 41 of the 50 credit unions in the table made more than half of their vehicle loans through an indirect arrangement, according to NCUA data.
- The largest ten hold 16.9% of all credit union vehicle loans, and the 50 in the table hold 35.2%, according to NCUA data. Half of the total is held by the largest 111 credit unions.
- 111 federally insured credit unions report no vehicle loans at all, according to NCUA data.
What this means for technology buyers
An auto book is a lending business with its own decisioning, servicing and collections, and an indirect program adds dealer relationships and application volume that arrives in bursts. These guides compare the options side by side:
- Credit decision engines for consumer lending: automated decisions on auto applications, direct or from a dealer.
- Loan servicing platforms: payments, escrow and payoff for an installment loan book.
- Collections and recovery software: delinquency work and repossession tracking.
- Mobile banking apps: where members apply for and pay a direct auto loan.

How this list was built
The universe is every federal credit union and federally insured state-chartered credit union in the NCUA's quarterly Call Report data for June 30, 2026. Vehicle loans are Account 385 (new vehicle loans) plus Account 370 (used vehicle loans) on Schedule A, Section 1. The NCUA's Call Report instructions define both as loans where a vehicle manufactured for household use, as NCUA regulations §723.2 put it, is pledged as collateral. Loans are reported there without regard to the channel, direct, indirect, purchased or participation, so purchased loans and the retained part of a participation are included. The number of loans is Account 958 plus Account 968.
Indirect vehicle loans are Account IN0002 on Schedule A, Section 5: the outstanding amount of indirect new and used vehicle loans, which are a subset of the same loans. No credit union reports more indirect vehicle loans than vehicle loans.
The NCUA separately publishes a Quarterly Credit Union Data Summary from the same filings. This list reproduces it: 4,214 credit unions, the same total assets, and the same auto, new auto and used auto loan totals to the rounding the summary prints ($485 billion in all, according to the NCUA). The comparisons above are computed and tested: the leader's book is checked against the next five combined and the next one after them, and the count behind "half of the total" is the smallest that reaches half.
Limits
- What is in, and what is out. In: loans secured by a new or used car or other vehicle for household use, whether made directly, through a dealer, or bought. Out: loans on ATVs, RVs, motorcycles and boats, which the NCUA counts as other secured loans; vehicle loans secured by real estate, which are counted as real estate loans; and vehicle leases, which are a separate line (Account 002).
- Outstanding balances, not originations. The figure is the book on June 30, 2026. A credit union that sells or participates out the loans it makes can originate more than it holds.
- Federally insured only. A small number of state-chartered credit unions are privately insured; the NCUA's totals leave them out, and so does this list. Banks and finance companies are not in it.
- One publisher, one quarter. No other source publishes credit union auto loans one by one, so the check is against the NCUA's own summary. The date of the data is June 30, 2026.
