Members and assets rank credit unions differently

A credit union's membership and its balance sheet do not grow in step. 11 of the 50 credit unions with the most members are not among the 50 largest by assets, so a list by assets and a list by members name different institutions.

  • The largest ten by members serve 21.9% of all members, and the 50 in the table serve 37.4%. The smallest of them reports 396,812 members.
  • The median credit union has 4,781 members.
  • 686 credit unions, 16% of the total, have fewer than 1,000 members.

What this means for technology buyers

Membership sets the volume a credit union's member-facing systems carry: logins, service requests, loan applications and statements. These guides compare the options side by side:

How this list was built

The universe is every federal credit union and federally insured state-chartered credit union in the NCUA's quarterly Call Report data for June 30, 2026. Credit unions are ranked by the number of members each reports; total assets are from the same report, and the asset rank is the credit union's place among all 4,214 by total assets.

The NCUA separately publishes a Quarterly Credit Union Data Summary from the same filings. This list reproduces it: 4,214 credit unions, and the same membership and total assets to the rounding the summary prints. The two comparisons above are computed and tested: the leader's membership is checked against the next 8 combined and the next one after them, and the count behind "half of all members" is the smallest that reaches half.

Limits

  • Federally insured only. A small number of state-chartered credit unions are privately insured; the NCUA's totals leave them out, and so does this list.
  • Members are counted by each credit union. A person who belongs to more than one credit union is counted by each, so the members of several credit unions cannot be added up into a count of people.
  • Headquarters is not where members live. The location shown is the credit union's headquarters as the NCUA lists it. A credit union can serve members across the country and abroad.
  • One publisher, one quarter. No other source publishes credit union membership one by one, so the check is against the NCUA's own summary. The date of the data is June 30, 2026, and a merger can move a credit union up the list between filings.
