20 US-listed life and annuity insurers by assets

Insurers are ranked by total assets at the latest quarter-end each has filed. Assets measure the size of a life insurer better than premiums do, because money paid into annuities is mostly recorded as deposits, not premiums. Net premiums earned for the last full fiscal year are shown beside assets for comparison.

How this list was built

The universe is every company EDGAR files under the life insurance and accident and health insurance industry codes, plus Equitable Holdings, Inc., which EDGAR files as an insurance agency, whose shares or preferred stock trade on a US exchange. Total assets are the figure each company reported in the SEC's XBRL financial data at its latest quarter-end; net premiums earned are for its last full fiscal year.

Limits

  • Listed companies only. Mutual life insurers file no financial statements with the SEC, and several of the largest US life insurers are mutuals.
  • Preferred-only listings count. Some insurers owned by asset managers remain SEC filers because their preferred stock is listed; they are ranked on their own balance sheets.
  • Assets include separate accounts. Variable annuity and variable life assets held for policyholders are on the balance sheet, which favors insurers with large variable books.
  • Accident and health included. The second industry code brings in supplemental health insurers alongside life and annuity writers.
  • As tagged. A company that did not tag premiums shows "not tagged".
