The CFPB's enforcement list shows 386 public actions filed since 2012: 9 in 2025, against 55 in 2015, the most in any year, and none had been filed in 2026 when the list was read on October 24, 2026. The most recent filing on the list is dated August 21, 2025. According to the CFPB, 185 of the 386 actions now carry the status Expired/Terminated/Dismissed, 194 are in the post-order or post-judgment stage and 7 are pending litigation.
Every count here is from the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau's own enforcement actions list, read on October 24, 2026, and matches the totals the CFPB's list prints for each year, status and product. The CFPB publishes no table of amounts, so each penalty and relief figure is read from the action's own page, in the CFPB's words.

Actions by year filed
Each action is counted once, in the year of its initial filing date, with the status the CFPB gives it today. The last two columns count the actions whose page states a civil money penalty or consumer relief.

What this means for technology buyers
Mortgage origination and debt collection are among the products the CFPB tags most often on its actions. An order can require a firm to change how the work is done and recorded, as well as to pay. These guides compare the systems involved:
- Collections and recovery software for banks: how collection contacts are made, limited and logged.
- Loan origination systems for mortgage banks: disclosures and pricing at the point a mortgage is made.
- Loan servicing platforms for specialty finance: payments, fees and account records after origination.
- Audit management systems for financial services: tracking the findings and remediation an order calls for.

How this was built
The universe is every action on the CFPB's enforcement actions list. Each action page was read for its initial filing date, forum, docket number, status and product tags. The action count, each status, each product and each calendar year were then checked against the "filtered results" count the CFPB's list prints for the same filter, and all of them match.
Amounts come from the prose on each action page. A figure counts as a penalty only where the CFPB's words beside it say penalty or fine, and as consumer relief only where they say redress, restitution, refunds, relief or compensation. Figures the page describes as suspended, waived, a maximum, "up to" an amount, sought in a complaint, or paid to another agency are not counted. Each table ranks the largest single figure of its kind on the page, not a sum, because pages restate figures, report amended and vacated orders, and impose the same judgment on several defendants.
Every action that reaches either table, or would if the script's reading were taken as it is, was read by a person. 23 actions were reviewed, and 6 figures differ from what the script read, each with its reason in the dataset: for example, one page prints a penalty as "$950,000 million" where the order itself says $950,000. A refresh that brings in a new large figure fails the build until it has been read.
Limits
- Ordered, not collected. The amounts are what the CFPB's pages say an order or judgment imposes. Default judgments against firms that have closed, and judgments in bankruptcy, may never be paid. The CFPB reports payments to harmed consumers separately.
- Older pages say less. Many action pages are a single sentence, more often for older actions. 96 pages state no dollar figure of any kind, 69 of them for actions filed before 2018, so the amount columns and the largest-amount tables understate those years. The CFPB's orders and press releases carry the amounts; this page reads only the action pages.
- The CFPB's own words. A figure the page does not label, such as a judgment amount with no word for what it is, is kept in the dataset but not counted. Qualifiers such as "an estimated" and "more than" are shown as the CFPB states them.
- One agency. Some actions were brought alongside the Justice Department, other banking regulators or state attorneys general. Their penalties are not counted, even where the CFPB's page mentions them.
- Status is today's. A status is the one the CFPB shows on October 24, 2026, not the status when the action was filed. The CFPB defines each status.
- Public actions only. The list covers the actions the CFPB has made public. Supervisory findings and nonpublic matters are not on it.
- Names as published. Companies are named as the CFPB titles each action, and one company can have several actions.
