Key Takeaways

  • The three nationwide credit bureaus, TransUnion, Equifax and Experian, drew 87% of the 6,514,045 complaints the CFPB received from July 2025 through June 2026, according to CFPB data.
  • The company with the most complaints after the bureaus, Capital One, drew 32,852; the fewest of the three bureaus drew 1,708,976.
  • 90% of all complaints in the window were about credit reporting, the CFPB's largest product by far; 10 products follow, led by debt collection.
  • The CFPB says complaints are not a representative sample and should be read against company size, so these counts are not rates.

The three nationwide credit bureaus, TransUnion, Equifax and Experian, drew 87% of the 6,514,045 consumer complaints the CFPB received from July 2025 through June 2026. The company with the most complaints after them, Capital One, drew 32,852, more of them in the credit card product than in any other; the bureau with the fewest, Experian, drew more than 52 times as many, according to CFPB data.

These are counts, not rates. According to the CFPB, its complaints are not a statistical sample and are not representative of all consumers' experiences, and companies with more customers may have more complaints than companies with fewer. No single public measure of size covers credit bureaus, banks, debt collectors and payment apps alike, so this page ranks by count and the table shows what each company's complaints were about.

Who leads each product

Credit reporting was 90% of all complaints in the window, according to CFPB data, which is why the three bureaus dominate the ranking. Of the other 10 products, the largest, debt collection, drew 333,625 complaints, led by CL Holdings with 20,377.

Where a bureau leads a product, the last column names the company with the most complaints outside the three bureaus.

Why the credit bureaus are most of the database

Each of the three bureaus drew at least 99% of its complaints in the credit reporting product, by CFPB data, and together they drew 5,675,802. Outside the bureaus, 838,243 complaints, 13% of the total, are spread across the other companies in the database.

What this means for technology buyers

A complaint to the CFPB reaches the company for a response, and the CFPB publishes how the company responded. For a lender, servicer or collector, that makes complaint handling part of servicing, with a record of what each customer was told. These guides compare the software involved:

How this list was built

The universe is every complaint in the CFPB's Consumer Complaint Database received from July 1, 2025 through June 30, 2026: four full calendar quarters, ending at the latest quarter-end at least a month before the database's last update, counted by the date the CFPB received each complaint. Each complaint is counted once, under the company the CFPB filed it against. Names are as the CFPB files them; no affiliates are combined, and the table shows a shortened form of each filed name.

The counts were read from the CFPB's public search API, without downloading the database. They reconcile four ways, and the build checks each: the 4,195 companies' counts add up to the API's own total of 6,514,045; each product's companies add up to that product's total; the products add up to the window's total; and, for every company, its counts by product add up to its overall count.

The three nationwide credit bureaus are a recorded list of the names the CFPB files them under. The build checks that each is in the data and that nearly all of each one's complaints are about credit reporting.

Limits

  • Complaints are what consumers report, not a sample. According to the CFPB, a complaint is published once the company responds or after 15 days, complaints are not "information" for the purposes of the Information Quality Act, and the database is not representative of all consumers' experiences.
  • Counts scale with size. According to the CFPB, companies with more customers may have more complaints than companies with fewer, and complaint volume should be read against company size and market share. This page does not adjust for size.
  • Some companies are missing. The CFPB does not publish complaints it refers to other regulators, such as complaints about depository institutions with less than $10 billion in assets.
  • Names as filed. A group that files under several company names appears once per name, and a company is credited with complaints the CFPB filed against it, whatever product the consumer chose.
  • One window. The data covers complaints received July 2025 through June 2026, read on October 23, 2026. The CFPB says the database generally updates daily, so a later count for the same window can differ slightly.
