How concentrated US deposits are

  • The largest bank holds 11.7% of deposits in the US offices of insured banks.
  • The largest four hold 35.0%, and the largest ten hold 49.0%.
  • The 50 banks in the table hold 74.0%. The smallest of them, Associated Bank, holds $40.1 billion.

Why domestic deposits, not total deposits

The FDIC reports two deposit figures for every bank: total deposits, and deposits held in domestic offices. The difference is what a bank books in its offices outside the United States. For 99% of insured banks the two are the same. For 19 of the 50 banks in the table they are not, and for some the gap changes the order.

Ranked by total deposits, The Northern Trust Company would place 25th. It holds $91.2 billion in foreign offices, and by deposits in US offices it places 42nd. A reader asking who holds the most American deposits is asking the second question.

What this means for technology buyers

Deposits are the funding base of a bank, and how concentrated they are shapes how banks compete for them. A bank outside the largest few competes for deposits on rate, on product and on the experience of opening and managing an account, and each of those runs on systems the bank chooses. These guides compare the options side by side:

How this list was built

The universe is every FDIC-insured institution in the FDIC's BankFind Suite that reported for June 30, 2026, including those whose charter has ended since, ranked by deposits held in domestic offices as filed in its Call Report. The FDIC defines these as the sum of demand, money market, other savings and time deposits in a bank's domestic offices. Total deposits and total assets are consolidated, so they include foreign offices. The 7 active institutions whose FDIC record does not yet carry a report for June 30, 2026 are left out.

The FDIC also publishes its Summary of Deposits, which lists every office of every insured institution with the deposits it held on June 30, 2026: 75,859 offices in the latest survey. Summed per bank, those offices were compared with the Call Report's domestic deposits for the same date. For 4,231 of the 4,247 banks in both, they agree to within the rounding of each office's figure to the thousand dollars, and so do 48 of the 50 banks in the table. Two listed banks do not: Citibank's offices in the FDIC's survey sum to $4.2 billion more than its Call Report domestic deposits; Synchrony Bank's two offices sum to $143 thousand more. The FDIC does not publish a reason, and the table uses the Call Report figure.

The Federal Reserve's Large Commercial Banks release, which the asset rankings are checked against, publishes assets and branch counts but not deposits, so it cannot confirm this ranking. The check here is the FDIC's two products against each other.

Limits

  • Banks, not bank holding companies. A group that owns several charters holds more deposits than any one of its rows, and deposits held by its other subsidiaries are not counted.
  • Deposits in US offices only. Money a bank books abroad is excluded from the ranking by design; the table shows total deposits beside it.
  • Insured US institutions only. Uninsured US branches of foreign banks and credit unions are not counted. Credit unions have their own ranking.
  • A balance on one day. Deposits move with rates and with the calendar. The date of the data is June 30, 2026, and a merger can reorder the list between filings.
  • Not a measure of market share in any one place. A bank's deposits are spread across every market it serves. The Summary of Deposits has the office-level detail for local market shares.
